Methane leaks escaping from oil and gas production sites and pipeline infrastructure are are relevant: an estimated $30 billion in lost natural gas every year. Since methane is a powerful greenhouse gas ( it can warm the planet more than 80 times as much as the same amount of carbon dioxide over a 20-year period if it escapes into the atmosphere before being burned) , that is bad news for climate change.

According to a new report titled “Fuelling a Digital Methane Future” by the Environmental Defence Fund (EDF) and Accenture, Digital technologies – such as the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), predictive maintenance and automated asset management – hold the potential to reduce methane emissions for the oil and gas industry. These technologies could prevent the annual loss of $34bn in vented, flared and leaked methane.
